The purpose of this design was to create a space to commemorate the Tay Bridge disaster.
The idea in this design was focused on the fragility of the bridge; the series of initial designs – shown in the models below – are developments that try to depict that structure of the bridge was once strong, became weak and eventually collapsed.
The final design was influenced by the 12 pillars that were destroyed by the disaster. Each pillar in the design becomes more fragmented as the sculpture curves like the shape of the bridge. It shows the development of the disaster and mirrors many aspects of the structure of the bridge.
